Making Magic in the Home Studio

Sometimes when I record, I think to myself...man did I get lucky. There's no way I could do this again if I had to. Sometimes you just get it exactly right.

For me, recording is the process of taking one track and building on it. I keep layering instruments and different parts as I see fit. Until, one day I listen back to it, and it seems almost magical.

Of course there is always the fine tuning, and the mixing, etc. But once you have all of your basic tracks and everything how you want, it should sound great to your ear. If it doesn't, you're not doing something right.

It's weird sometimes when I listen back months later, I'll hear stuff that I can't even remember doing. This is usually due to moving stuff around the stereo spectrum and the way things are mixed. It's great when something just jumps out at you and sounds just perfect. Sometimes the littlest parts make a huge difference.

As long as all of your tracks sound good, your instruments are in tune, your timing is perfect, and everything gets mixed properly. You should have no problem making great music in your home studio.

I always think to myself, why would I ever pay someone to record me? I can do all of this at my leisure. The way I want it. It may not be as "perfect" as the professional CD, but with patience and some practice, you can get pretty darn close.
