Hardware VS Software

palako's picture

Hi all,

I'm not even sure if this is a correct use of this site, but as I see people writting blog posts as if they were discussion board entries, here I go with mine...

I just want to get started into home recording. So far I've been playing around a bit with GarageBand, and I know of the existance of much better software such as pro-tools, but I've never used any other (I used fast track 12 years ago or so, but just a bit).

On the other hand, there are these digital recorders as the BR-600 that everybody seems to love.

My question (lame?) is: why would one want to use one of those hardware recorders instead of  just using the computer? What are the advantages?

As I said, I'm not experienced at all in either the software or the hardware way of doing it, but from the newbie-I-am point of view, I can only see hardware toys harder to use. Instead of having a big color screen you have a two lines LCD display(or similar). Instead of drag and drop to position your stuff just where you want it, you have those arrow buttons... The number of tracks that you can have on software is way more than these other units (8?, 16?). Software also contains effects processors and drumkits, tons of them.... I could go on....

So what is it that I'm not seeing? It will be probably obvious, I know, by I needed to ask.

Thanks all,

 Jose

Im owning a br600 and im very happy with htis little studio. after recording songs i bounce the tracks and add some effects then im mastering this song> everything sounds beautiful on the br60 machine now i have 2 opportunities to bring the song to my pc. if i use the br600´s export function i get the song to my pc- everythings fine if i use the wav converter i have the felling, that all the effercts i added while bouncing and mastering are missed on my pc. i want to use the wav converter, cause its a powerfull tool which saves also a lot of time, but i want to get the song the way i created it. can you help? thx elfi

BR600 jog wheel

jon_wood_uk's picture

I dropped my BR600 and it appears that the only damage is to the jog wheel. This is a small component with three connections to the side and two larger pins near the middle. It looks a bit like a potentiometer. Does anyone know what the component is so I can obtain a spare?
